Parlor Dance Company performed new work ‘Close Distance’ at the Guildhall, St.Ives on Saturday 23rd March 2013. Choreographed by artistic director Helen Parlor the piece primarily focused on the concept of relationships amongst neighbours, a show about next door. Communicated through dance, visual projection, accompaniment and speech the work questions, reflects and identifies boundaries that exist; personal and in relation to those within a close distance.

Content deriving from everyday actions and reactions represented reality. Everyday people, everyday troubles, and everyday movement conveying everyday lives. This fresh, energised approach allowed for unique audience interaction. Enabling creative space for the audience to go on their own creative journey through reflecting, questioning and clarifying thoughts and feelings provoked by represented relationships. Humour cleverly incorporated through both physical and verbal interaction enhanced emotion and made the piece relatable in one way or another to every audience member. Boundaries between audience and performer had been crossed in a welcoming and subtle manner; the work was at one with its audience.

Visual projections added a further dimension but due to venue locality did not have the impact that was intended, resulting in a sense of disjointedness. Some projections being unclear and even missed altogether questioned the appropriateness of the space as it detracted from the desired impact. Even though somewhat lost the visuals allowed space for imagination, adding immense depth from an audience perspective. Snippets of film gave an insight to each character as though a representation/gateway into their thoughts, desires and feelings through the eyes and minds of its audience. Incorporating gestural movement vocabulary holding a sense of playfulness and freedom undeniably correlates with the use of live and pre-recorded speech, relating to the differing dynamic content and personalities represented.

A key question was ‘do you see me?’ This questioned your own life, relationships and scenarios of human interaction, how barriers do not enable people to see who you are, the real you. This concept was made apparent through individualistic and symbolic movement content that each personality revealed within the comfort of their space. Creating the idea and reality that it is behind closed doors, within a space that is only seen and felt by you, is where the real you lies. A side to your personality that is not necessarily acknowledged by others and it is through this lack of self-expression that tensions can arise. Dynamic tensions, playfulness, internal and external thought provoking movement further enhanced by speech, identified the contrasting thoughts and feelings that are hidden and not shared due to barriers we create. This resulted in an image that is not necessarily true to you being seen by others.

Do you see your neighbour for who they really are? Do we judge by exterior facets and see them as just a neighbour? Rather than a friend, someone you know? Do we create barriers as neighbours that do not allow people in to see the real you? I fear yes, however the piece suggests through interaction and acceptance boundaries can be crossed, intertwined and broken down. Portrayed through playful contact work specifically shared between a male character that held a backpack as a symbol of his identity, and a female that he adored represented the acceptance of one another. The intertwining and shared connection through incorporation of linking movements and physical impact joined them as one. Relationships with those in a close distance to you are something to embrace not ignore and through the simple means of human communication, saying hello, inviting them in for a cup of tea are by no means time consuming aspects of life that dissolve the personal barriers that exists amongst strangers.

Let people in, let people see, let people share then in a time of need there will be an open door waiting for you to come in.

Hello Colleagues in the Cornwall and South West Brass Band community and Music Cornwall. You may recall that we organised an open rehearsal at Heartlands last year as part of BBC Music Nation’s Olympic preparations. Five bands and many individual performers took part (thank you!) with the support of the BBC Concert Orchestra and we rehearsed three of the seven “Episodes” that constitute the new work by Simon Dobson. We have another 4 to learn and we will be “on our way” for the performances.

Adventurers in Music is a new work for musicians and actors with a script by Jane Pugh and a music score by Simon Dobson. The work is written in seven musical episodes to be performed by silver and brass band performers of different skill levels. One episode is written for primary school learners, another for a youth band, a third for a community band, fourth for a group of teachers, fifth for a competition level band, sixth for a very experienced flugel horn soloist, and the seventh is the whole ensemble. These “boundaries” are not fixed but the idea is to be inclusive of all levels and attainments in banding.

Interspersed with the musical episodes are seven dramatic scenes, which tell a simple story of life in mining communities towards the end of the 19th century. The music was piloted in rehearsal by a group of five bands (Camborne Youth Band, St Stythians Band, Launceston Town Band, Bude Metric Brass and the young group from Lanner Band) in March 2012 at Heartlands, Pool, and scenes from the script by Near-ta Theatre at a development day in May 2012. We are proposing to mount public performances of the work in June 6th – 9th and 16th June 2013 and record the music and script (at rehearsals on the weekend of May 17-18th) to enhance the performances and provide a digital legacy for the project.

New for 2013 Art8 Newquay brings you an eclectic mix of four Cornish Theatre Companies as part of the festival. Live theatre performance is a new addition to the festival line-up and brings an added dimension to an already vibrant festival program. Bringing local theatre to the town for Art8 is part of a longer term plan to establish a tradition of performance and theatre work in the town, as it once supported a number of theatre venues. The Theatre shows you can see this April is family show, The Beast of Bodmin Moor/The Blizzard/Great Expectations and Wrongdoings and Wake-Up Calls at the Stop Off Motel.

Beast of Bodmin Moor – Bish Bash Bosh Theatre Co.

Over the past 30 years there have been more than 60 sightings of this mythical legend. The debate of its existence continues…This phantom wild cat is often blamed for the gruesome killing of livestock. The Natural History Museum claim to have in their possession, the skull of the mammal, whilst, a squadron of RAF combed the wild and rugged landscape of Bodmin Moor in search of this elusive creature. Will we ever know for sure if there really is a beast? Alan M Kent, a Cornish poet, novelist, dramatist, author and editor of a number of works on Cornish and Anglo-Cornish literature tells a charming tale for children of how a big cat came to wander our landscape in his recent bi-lingual picture book for children, The Beast of Bodmin Moor. The story has proved to be very popular across Cornwall and BishBashBosh Productions could not resist adapting it for the stage.

Come and see this magical show for children of ALL ages. The heart-warming narrative is set on Bodmin Moor but follows the Beast on its often tricky and dangerous adventures around Cornwall.

See the show on: Friday 12th of April, at The Art8 Studios, at 2pm/6.30pm

Blizzard – (Nigel Billing)

Written and performed by local actor Nigel Billing is a tale of three Newquay men and their life at sea as cargo carriers during the late 19th century. Combining storytelling and music this story takes us through the adventures and hardships endured by these brave men as they struggle to make their living shipping culm during the great blizzard of 1891. Running time 40 mins

See the show on: Friday 12th of April, at The Rowing Club, Newquay Harbour at 7.30pm

Review of COUNTRYBOYS STRUGGLE by Matthieu Bethermin

At The Poly Theatre, 22nd March 2013

I was unsure as to what to expect when asked to review CountryBoy’s Struggle written and performed by Maxwell Golden at the Poly in Falmouth on Friday 22nd March. As I took my seat alongside my mum we were slightly disappointed to see a rather small audience which as the performance started did not reflect the sheer talent of Golden and his ability to engage with his audience. As we waited and watched the sparse stage set with the background tunes of hip-hop vibes we were shocked to see Golden leap from the audience onto the stage like a predator hiding in the bush to devour it’s prey. I was captured by the sheer energy of Golden as he interacted with his audience like the showman he is asking us to take out whatever we had in our pockets or bags for him to lyrically rap to. He bounced around the audience like a firecracker jumping from one side of the audience to the other. The atmosphere was electric and his comedic timing and off the cuff rapping had me captivated. It was also great to see some of the Falmouth school sixth form student’s get “on it” with some great rapping and base beats! Go guys!

Directed by American hip-hop artist Baba Israel, Golden plays “Michael” a wide-eyed country boy hailing from Bude in Cornwall with the unlikely aspiration of going to London to make it in the hip-hop world as an MC. We are taken into a narrative of Michael from birth to his eventual integration into the London hip-hop scene with hilarious and thought provoking anecdotes and imagery through sharply delivered multi-characters and physical dexterity that had you hooked. I wanted Michael the rural country boy and geek to succeed in this urban world of hard edges, to break through and win the hearts and minds of the hip-hop world. Every movement and character was expertly portrayed and slickly delivered that at one point I almost forgot that there was infact one actor on the stage! Golden’s ability to play 40 characters is breathtaking and the mix of great hip-hop sounds had me moving in my seat with some of my favourites that I almost wanted to get up onto the stage and rap along with him! The mix of humour and drama with the underlying sadness of his alcoholic father and deceased mother was compelling and although there were times when I lost my way Golden sharply brought me back into focus.

I had a great night and my Mum enjoyed it too! I would thoroughly recommend anyone above 12 to come and see this captivating performance. My only criticism is that is was a little too long for me but without a doubt CountryBoy’s Struggle is worth seeing and a must for all those would be MC rappers out there! It’s “off the chain”!

Come and check out: Countryboy’s Struggle, critically acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe Festival show by local Bude boy Maxwell Golden.

Michael is a rap star … or at least he is when he dreams, but growing up in rural Cornwall he’s never had a chance to find his community. One day, after being kicked out of home after a fight with his father, he sets off to London to become an MC.

A fast, funny and honest story of one man’s search for a sense of belonging, CountryBoy’s Struggle mixes Hip Hop, spoken word and physical theatre.

This debut solo show from writer and performer Maxwell Golden features over 40 characters, all delivered by Maxwell in a tour-de-force performance.

Directed by Baba Israel. Suitable for ages 12+

“Abundant talent, integrity and wisdom” ***** – REMOTEGOAT
